What to Expect on Move In Day

Atlanta Peach Movers understands how stressful move-in day can be. Whether it is a long or short distance move, the pressure is still the same. Luckily, with over 30 years in the business, Atlanta Peach Movers has seen plenty of move-in days and is here to help! These are some of our recommendations on what to expect on move-in day, and how to make it a successful one.

Do a quick walkthrough

The first thing you should do when you reach your new home is do a quick walkthrough of it. It is important to ensure that the previous owners repaired everything they said they would before selling their home. Take this time to make sure that everything in the house is working. Examine heating/cooling systems, lights, electrical sockets, window/door locks to check that they are all working properly and avoid future issues you may run into with them. Also, look to see if everything you were told would be there is. For example, see if the washer and dryer were left behind if you were told they would be. Walkthroughs are one of the most important steps and should definitely be on your list of what to expect on move in day.

Deep clean your new home

Moving into a new home is exciting, so we understand the want to immediately unpack everything and start settling in. However, you never know how well the people who lived there before you cleaned when they moved out. Deep cleaning the place, whether it be you or a cleaning service, will make your fresh start that much better! Don’t forget to clean the fridge, as well! You want your new place to be as germ-free as possible before setting up furniture or putting your food away.

Change locks/ security system

Changing your locks is a key part of moving into a new home. Oftentimes people will give spare keys to a trusted neighbor or friend. Now that it is you in that home, you do not know who has a copy of the original key or who knows the code to your house. It is best to change everything to avoid all of the stress of not knowing who has access to your home. If your new place has one, we also recommend changing your security system’s code – it is better to be safe than sorry!

Make sure all of your furniture fits

There is nothing worse than struggling to move a large piece of furniture indoors only to discover it is too big for the space. While it is an added step, it is worth it to take the time to measure out the rooms and ensure that your furniture will fit before trying. Measuring and checking that everything will fit is a big part of what to expect on move in day. Unpacking large pieces of furniture is an easy way to make the empty house feel like a home, so once you know if they will fit or not we recommend setting them up early on in the process.

Meet your neighbors

Perhaps one of the most exciting but also nerve racking parts of moving homes is meeting your new neighbors! It is an easy way to make new friends and start to feel acquainted with the neighborhood. We already have a blog post up about how to meet your neighbors after a move, so feel free to check that one out for more tips!

Change you address

Last but not least on our list of what to expect on move in day, we strongly recommend changing your address on all of your mail and important documents. If you cannot get this step done right on the day you move in, it is best to get it done shortly after so you are not missing important messages or notices.
