What to Do When Preparing for Military Movers?

Preparing for Military Movers

Do you really know what you should do when preparing for military movers? Military and civilian life are very different from each other, and moving is no exception. Civilians can move at their convenience to a place of their choosing. However, service members must relocate wherever their Permanent Change of Station (PCS) order indicates.

Military moving does have its benefits. You don’t have to pack a thing, for instance. The government makes those arrangements on your behalf. But you should still tie up any loose ends before the movers arrive. Here’s what you should do in preparation for moving day:

Write Down Everything You Own

Preparing for military movers is the time to inventory everything—and we mean everything—you own. What’s hiding inside closets, drawers, cabinets, and under the bed? There’s a good chance you don’t know. Pull out all your belongings and arrange them by category. Sort each item by room. And take all the photos! Store your itemized list in a PCS binder (more on that later!).

An accurate inventory will make your life so much easier when you start to unpack. Check off items as you pull them out of boxes, ensuring they didn’t get damaged in transit. And since you hopefully tossed any unwanted junk, you can start fresh with a well-organized space.

Start a PCS Binder

Not everything you own should go on the moving truck. Vital documents should remain in your possession. Instead of tossing them willy-nilly in a duffle bag, create a designated PCS binder to keep on you at all times. Be sure to include:

  • Military documents
  • Passport
  • Personal documents
  • Photo identification
  • Health paperwork
  • Insurance documents
  • Car title
  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate
  • Household inventory

Your PCS binder will serve you long after the move. Once you make a binder, you can simply update it as needed. No more tearing your house apart to find that one crucial piece of paper!

Secure Your Pets (and Kids!)

Once the movers arrive, you won’t have to lift a finger. They’ll pack everything and load it on the truck, but it’s a long process that will take several hours. The last thing you want to do is step on their toes.

Make arrangements for your pets beforehand. You can either keep your four-legged friends in a crate or send them to doggie daycare for the day. The same goes for your kids. Let them play at a friend’s house or hire a babysitter to keep them out of the way.
