Tips for Moving with a Cat
Introduction
Moving is often a stressful process—and not just for humans. When it comes to our feline companions, relocating can lead to anxiety and behavioral changes if not handled properly. Cats are territorial creatures that thrive on familiarity and routine. As a result, a sudden change in environment can be overwhelming. This blog aims to provide practical, compassionate, and actionable tips for relocating with pets, specifically for cat owners who want to ensure their feline friends stay safe and calm during this transition.
We’ll cover every phase of the move—from planning and packing to travel and settling into your new home—with a focus on how to keep a cat calm during a move. For a broader overview of pet relocation, check out our guide Moving Pets: Make a Smooth Transition. Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, these strategies will help you avoid common pitfalls and make the experience less upsetting for your furry friend.
Before the Move: Preparing Your Cat
Create a Safe and Calm Space
As you start packing your belongings, your home may become cluttered and chaotic. Designate a separate, quiet room for your cat where they won’t be disturbed. Include their bed, familiar toys, a scratching post, and fresh food and water. This space serves as their refuge and helps minimize their exposure to unsettling changes. Try to keep this room consistent and avoid moving items around too often. Familiarity will reassure your cat that they still have a space to call their own even as the rest of the home transforms.
Additionally, you may want to play soft music or nature sounds in the room to help maintain a soothing atmosphere. Some cats respond positively to classical music or white noise machines, which can also help drown out noises from packing or moving crews in other areas of the home.
Get Your Cat Comfortable with the Carrier
Your cat’s travel carrier will be their safe haven on moving day and during transit, so help your cat acclimate to it weeks in advance. Leave the carrier out in the open with the door off and place treats, soft bedding, and toys inside to transform it into a positive space. Gradually get your cat used to going in and out of the carrier comfortably. You may even consider feeding your cat inside the carrier so they associate it with something pleasant. For guidance on what you need to pack, visit our Packing Materials List for Moving.
If your cat is particularly resistant to the carrier, consider covering it with a familiar-smelling blanket to make it feel more secure. Over time, increase the amount of time your cat spends inside with the door closed so they become familiar with the experience of being contained, which will make transit less traumatic.
Schedule a Vet Visit
Take your cat to the vet for a health checkup. Ensure their vaccinations are up to date and discuss options such as mild sedatives or calming aids if they experience travel anxiety. If you’re moving across state lines, inquire about health certificates and microchipping. This step is crucial for a smooth and compliant relocation process.
Also, ask your vet for copies of your cat’s medical records, especially if you’re changing vets in your new area. These documents may be necessary for boarding, grooming services, or in the event of an emergency. Make a checklist of medications your cat might need and stock up ahead of time in case of delays during travel.
Stick to a Routine
Despite the bustle of preparing for the move, try to maintain your cat’s feeding times and daily routine. Stability in their daily rhythm can make a major difference in how well your cat adjusts. Even small changes, such as feeding time or play sessions, can affect their sense of well-being. Keeping your behaviors predictable reassures your cat that all is well.
If you feed your cat wet food, keep their preferred brands and feeding utensils during the move to maintain their appetite. Try to provide regular playtime, which not only reinforces routine but also helps burn off nervous energy.
On Moving Day: Keeping Your Cat Calm
Keep Your Cat in a Secure Room
On the day of the move, keep your cat confined to the safe space you’ve prepared. Place a note on the door to prevent movers or family members from accidentally opening it. This minimizes stress and prevents your cat from escaping during the chaos of moving boxes and furniture. If possible, move your cat to a trusted friend’s house or to a quiet portion of your new or old home before the movers arrive. Fewer disruptions mean less stress for your cat and also reduce the risk of them being accidentally let out.
Use Calming Solutions
Consider spraying the carrier and room with feline calming pheromones like Feliway. These natural, scentless sprays mimic a cat’s facial pheromones and create a sense of familiarity and security. There are also vet-recommended supplements and calming collars that can help manage stress levels. Be sure to test these products in advance to observe your cat’s response.
Another option includes calming chews or natural supplements like L-theanine, which some pet owners find effective. Always consult your vet before introducing new calming aids, especially if your cat is on medication.
Provide Comfort Items
Place your cat’s favorite blanket or a piece of your clothing in their carrier. Familiar smells can go a long way in providing emotional comfort. These small touches help reduce stress and encourage a sense of calm. You may also want to bring one or two of their favorite toys or even a small amount of litter from their usual litter box to remind them of home.
Including a small, soft toy that carries their scent can be an added source of comfort during the move. These tangible reminders help maintain a connection to their routine and surroundings, no matter where they are.
During the Move: Traveling with Your Cat
Transporting Your Cat by Car
Safely secure your cat’s carrier in the back seat using a seatbelt. Avoid placing it in the trunk or front seat. Make sure the interior temperature is comfortable and avoid playing loud music. Try to stop every few hours for brief breaks if the drive is long. During breaks, never let your cat roam outside of their carrier unless in a secure, enclosed space.
Keep a travel bag with essential supplies: a small litter tray, waste bags, disposable gloves, a bottle of water, your cat’s favorite treats, and a towel or blanket. Familiar scents and a steady climate will greatly reduce your pet’s travel stress.
Flying with a Cat
If you’re flying, consult your airline about specific policies for traveling with pets. Use an airline-approved carrier and give your cat a light meal a few hours before the flight to avoid motion sickness. Attach an ID label to the carrier with your contact info, destination address, and emergency contact.
Check whether your cat will fly in the cabin or as cargo. If in the cargo hold, research the airline’s record with pet safety. Confirm that there is climate control in the cargo area and that your cat’s carrier is appropriately labeled and secured. Where possible, try to book direct flights to reduce travel time and avoid layovers in unfamiliar, noisy airports.
Plan for Extra Costs
Moving with a cat can incur additional costs like pet transport services, vet paperwork, calming aids, and travel supplies. Get a full picture of potential expenses by visiting our blog on How to Estimate Your Moving Expenses.
Don’t forget to budget for any pet deposits or added rental fees if you’re moving into an apartment. You may also need to factor in carpeting or furniture protection to avoid additional expenses if your cat takes time adjusting to the new place.
After the Move: Helping Your Cat Adjust to a New Home
Designate a Quiet Introduction Room
Set up a designated room with everything your cat needs: food, water, a litter box, scratching post, and familiar bedding. Initially, keep your cat confined to this room while they recover from the trip and begin adjusting to their new territory. Don’t rush them into exploring the entire house.
Try to spend time in this room with them so they know they aren’t alone. Talking to them softly, offering treats, and engaging in low-stress play can help establish comfort. Consider placing a used item from the old home with your scent so your presence feels consistent.
Gradual Integration
Once your cat seems comfortable in the starter room—eating, grooming, and using the litter box—they are ready to explore more of the home. Open one new area at a time for them to explore at their own pace. Continue using pheromone diffusers throughout the house to reduce anxiety.
Allow your cat to explore on their own terms. Avoid forcing interaction with new spaces or people; instead, provide positive reinforcement when they explore voluntarily. Watch for signs of comfort, like tail-up body language and curiosity.
Monitor Behavior
Changes in appetite, hiding, or litter box habits are common immediately following a move but should normalize within a few days. If concerning behaviors persist, consult your vet. Staying attentive to these signals ensures your cat gets the support they need during a major life change.
Watch for positive signs too—like purring, head-butting, or kneading—as indicators that your cat is starting to feel more secure. Maintaining a log of behavior changes can also aid in discussions with your vet if symptoms persist.
Visit or Live with Roommates?
If you’re moving into a shared apartment, introducing your cat to roommates is a critical part of the adjustment process. Set ground rules and educate housemates on your cat’s habits and needs. Read more in our article: Moving with Roommates.
Encourage roommates to approach your cat calmly and avoid overstimulating them with loud noises or sudden movements. Sharing feeding or play tasks can also help build your cat’s trust over time, turning new faces into familiar allies.
Eco-Friendly Moves with Pets in Mind
Being eco-conscious doesn’t mean sacrificing your pet’s comfort. Consider using biodegradable litter, reusable travel food containers, and recyclable moving boxes. Learn more about reducing your environmental impact during your move at How to Make an Eco-Friendly Move.
Opting for used newspaper instead of packing peanuts, donating gently used pet items, and consolidating trips to reduce carbon emissions are all great ways to prioritize sustainability during your move—without compromising your cat’s well-being.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the best way to prepare my cat for a move?
The best way to prepare is by creating a calm space, introducing the carrier gradually, and visiting the vet for health checks. Routine is essential, and so is maintaining a quiet, predictable environment. Socializing your cat in changing conditions prior to the move can also help them develop better adaptability.
Is sedation safe for cats during a move?
Sedation can be considered on a case-by-case basis under veterinary guidance. Some cats benefit more from pheromones or calming supplements. Light sedatives may be recommended for cats with severe travel anxiety, but always opt for the least invasive method first. Monitor for any reactions during a trial run.
Should I let my cat roam freely in the car?
No. It’s best to keep your cat in a secure carrier during travel to prevent injury or escape. An open vehicle poses multiple risks for unrestrained pets. Even a quick stop could lead to an accidental escape or injury.
How long will it take for my cat to adjust to a new home?
This varies by cat. Some may settle in a couple of days, while others need weeks. Be patient, consistent, and avoid making major changes during the adjustment period. Keep them close to you during the first few days and reassure with touch and attention.
Conclusion: Moving with Your Cat—A Journey of Patience and Preparation
Moving with a cat doesn’t have to be a nightmare. With adequate cat moving day preparation, thoughtful planning, and lots of patience, you can help your feline friend transition smoothly into your new home. Remember, maintaining routine, providing comforting items, and introducing new environments gradually are key to helping your cat adjust to a new home.
