Looking forward to retirement and want to move to your dream location? With careful consideration and plenty of planning, your retirement dreams could come true sooner than you think.
We’re here to help you prepare for this exciting and well-deserved phase of life. From deciding where to retire to finding recreational activities for you to do once you get there. Here are some factors you should consider.
Your Budget
Maybe one of the most important factors of planning for your retirement is figuring out your budget. Without a reasonable budget, you can’t enjoy a successful retirement. To start budgeting for retirement, examine and account for all your current monthly expenses. This includes mortgage, utilities, car payments, and other recurring bills like internet or cable. After your monthly expenses take into account all of your leisure activities like shopping, dining out, groceries and other miscellaneous expenses.
One way to keep track of your spending habits is signing up for a free personal finance website or keeping your own spreadsheet. You can also consider hiring a financial advisor to help planning for your retirement. Finally, make sure to consider any potential sources of income you’ll be receiving during retirement each month. Like security checks, savings and investment returns. Once you have these numbers, you can figure out a monthly budget that works for you.
Where to retire
One of the most important things to consider is where you want to retire. In the U.S. there are so many places to choose from. Whether you’re looking to move somewhere else completely or planning to stay in your current town, there’s a city to meet your budget and needs.
Some of the top choices for retirement include:
- Sarasota, FL
- Minneapolis, MN
- San Diego, CA
- Charleston, SC
- Franklin, TN
- Greenville, SC
- Portland, ME
- Breward, NC
- Naples, FL
- Palm Springs, CA
- Santa Barbera, CA
- Las Vegas, NV
So many of these locations offer a multitude of recreational activities, as well as tax benefits, volunteer opportunities, and of course ideal weather.
Distance to Family and Friends
When moving for retirement, it’s important to consider just how far you want to be from family and friends. If you are currently in the same town as your loved ones and prefer to stay close to them, you should consider either retiring in your current city or moving within driving distance.
If you do retire away from loved ones, consider moving somewhere near a major airport. This will make it easier on you to visit others. But if you currently live far away from your loved ones, you may want to consider retiring near family and friends. Whichever you choose, be sure to visit the area and familiarize yourself with the city before the move.
Healthcare Facilities
Everyone needs a good doctor. So if you’re retiring or not you should always consider an area’s healthcare facilities and options when relocating to a new city. The best sources to find top-rated hospitals and doctors include:
In addition to finding the best hospitals, you should learn more about how moving affects your healthcare plan before retiring. You may have different healthcare plan options and prices depending on where you move.
Recreational Activities
Many retirees spend their time partaking in a slew of recreational activities. From tennis and golf to hiking and biking. There’s no shortage of things to do when you have so much more time on your hands. For this reason, many retirees choose their retirement destination based on what they like to do.
